July 1 2011 – Sowetan: Security guard Benjamin Jacobus Rafferty, 35, burnt to death inside a cash-in-transit van while it was being robbed – and it crashed into a slow freight-train and burned. The van was being held up by three black men – and one of them managed to grab the still-burning Afrikaner guard’s CZ75 pistol before they fled from the crash-site: nothing else was stolen. Police are investigating ‘culpible homicide’.

The strange incident occurred at Saaiplaas Shaft No3 at the Virginia railway crossing at about 9am July 1 2011. Police said Benjamin Jacobus Rafferty burnt to death: hs body had to be extracated mechanically. “Cash boxes were not tampered with since they were still locked. A pistol belonging to the van driver and a machine gun were found in the burnt-out van,” Khosana was quoted by Sowetan as commenting. She said after the collision the train dragged the cash-van a few metres until it fell on its side, with the wheels still next to the carriage.
“The train carriage with timber also caught fire and was almost derailed,” Khosana said. Rafferty’s body was taken to the Welkom state mortuary. A case of culpable homicide is being investigated.
